Chapel Choir at Cleveland's Severance Hall

If singing brings us closer to God, then the Capital University Chapel Choir will elevate thousands as it graces the stage of Cleveland’s Severance Hall Monday, Oct. 9, for a benefit Hymn Festival.

The choir will perform as the featured choral ensemble, along with Capital University organ professor Janet Linker and a Capital brass quintet, for Building Hope in the City’s annual gala. This exciting opportunity for service-learning and ministry will unite thousands of Northeast Ohio Christians for an evening of fellowship and song.

Building Hope in the City is an urban mission organization dedicated to assisting Lutheran congregations thrive in the city, connecting Christians in mission by planting new urban congregations and helping revitalize existing center-city ministries.

Since 1929, the Chapel Choir has upheld the rich Lutheran heritage of fine choral singing. In 1964, the Chapel Choir became the first American collegiate choir to make an extensive tour of the Orient with performances in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

Over the years, the choir has performed in Scandinavia, England, Germany and the People’s Republic of China. The group has appeared in some of the most storied venues throughout the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Boston’s Jordan Hall, the Chicago Opera House, the National Federation of Music Clubs, in Los Angeles and New York’s Hippodrome Theatre.

This past spring, the choir performed in 10 cities and five countries during a European tour that took it from the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris to Schlosskirche, in Wittenberg, Germany. In 2004, the choir celebrated its 75th anniversary with a European Tour with performances in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. Among the highlights was a concert in Wittenburg, Germany, at Schlosskirche, the church where theologian Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church door.

The gala begins at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $15, and box seats are $30. To purchase tickets, please call the Severance Hall Box Office at (216) 231-1111 or (800) 686-1141.
