Changing Majors...

So I came to Capital with a goal in mind. I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, where I wanted to go, who I wanted to work with, what I wanted to accomplish... everything. I had everything all planned out. I was set. I was ready to go. I had it under control.

But then I got here,...

and then I went to my classes,...

and suddenly...

I didn't feel so sure,...

and that Honors Intro To Political Science class was the most interesting part of my week. There were times, when I was more willing and anxious to write a three page paper about political theory than to do a simple work sheet for muscianship.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the conservatory. But, it's a lot of hard work, they tell you that during orientation. But, I guess I didn't really believe them. I should have though, because they weren't kidding. They were serious. It's a LOT of work. A lot of work that I couldn't handle. Well, not work that I couldn't handle, but work that I wasn't passionate about, and as Proffesor Eubanks tells us every couple days in music lit, you have to be passionate about music. You can't go to college for music because you like it, you can't go into music because you like band.  You have to love your instrument. Music has to be a need. A necessity. If you're passionate about music and it's a need and your life, then the hard work isn't so hard. It's fun, it's incredible, it's a challenge, but it's a challenge you want, but I've learned that for me it's not. And that's okay.

College isn't just about getting a degree and preparing for a job. It's about learning who you are, learning what you want to do, who you want to be. I thought that, for me, was a band director, I thought that was what I wanted, but, I was wrong. And I feel more sure going into political science than I ever did going into music. Granted, I'm not 100% sure what I intend to do with my degree. But, I do know that I couldn't participate succesfully in the conservatory as a full time student for the next four years.

In addition, I knew that I couldn't drop the conservatory all together. Luckily they added a degree program recently that allows me to get a bachelor of arts in music, while still having time to do something else here at Cap.

Now, this may seem random to those of you who don't know me. Since fall of my senior year, I had intended that if I didn't gain acceptance to any conservatories or for whatever reason decided that I didn't wanna do music, that I would major in Political Science. That's why I took the Intro to Political Science class as one of my gen ed courses.

I will admit I was not expecting the reaction I had to the class.

But regardless,..

I've changed majors. (I still have a form to get filled out and turned in, but my classes are scheduled and I'm ready to go)

And I'm very excited to not only start a new in the political science department, but to be able to continue as a less intense major in the conservatory.
