    • Biography

Dr. Payton comes to Capital University after teaching at Delta State University in Mississippi. In addition to teaching at Capital, he serves on the voice faculty at the nation's oldest young artist program for opera and musical theater, Seagle Music Colony, in New York during the summers.

He made both his Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center operatic debuts in Michael Ching's Corps of Discovery: A Musical Journey and recently sang the title role in Handel's Xerxes at Skidmore College in New York. Payton made his Italian chamber music debut at the International ClarinetFest in Assisi, and has performed Carmina Burana in Brazil. He is a frequent oratorio performer throughout the United States, and has performed at regional College Music Society conferences and recital tours with his professional chamber ensemble, Payton and the Pipes.

Payton maintains a private studio in New York City and has presented vocal masterclasses at Westminster Choir College, The Boston Conservatory, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Missouri, University of Kansas, Mississippi State University, and in Brasilia, Brazil. He was recognized as a national NATS Intern participant in 2014. Dr. Payton's voice students have won the national NATS competition, Hal Leonard's Vocal Competition, and are entering undergraduate and graduate programs of note throughout the United States. His private students are making their young artist debuts in various artists programs throughout the United States.

Additional research interests include gender studies within countertenor repertoire and audition preparation for both high school educators and students and professional artists.
