      Capital University has announced the appointment of Jody S. Fournier, Ph.D., as provost and vice president of learning, effective June 1, 2017.

      Fournier, who currently serves as associate provost for Academic and Student Affairs at Capital, was the candidate of choice following a national search launched in October. In his role as associate provost, and prior role as dean of studies, Fournier has been instrumental in pioneering Capital’s student success initiative anchored in the John N. Gardner Institute’s Foundations of Excellence. Fournier has facilitated a comprehensive approach to measuring and optimizing programs that impact students’ experiences in the first year – the most critical time for influencing whether a student will succeed in college – resulting in improved retention.

      In addition to his appointments in academic administration, Fournier is a tenured professor of psychology, and has earned Capital’s most prestigious award for teaching, the Praestantia Award, and the Cotterman Award, which recognizes faculty for excellence in student advising. He joined the Capital faculty in 1999, and counts among his greatest privileges the opportunity to teach, mentor, and advise students; to extend action research and community engagement into Central Ohio neighborhoods; and in the last decade to first lead a school in Capital’s unified College, then integrate the academic and student affairs divisions to promote student success and improve institutional retention, persistence, and completion.

      “Capital has a long tradition of tending to the curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular health of the student – of educating the whole student,” Fournier said. “Our newly reimagined provost position allows Capital University to pioneer a groundbreaking model of holistic education that integrates academic and student affairs. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with my colleagues to improve student learning across all of our programs.”

      In this newly defined role of provost and vice president of learning, Fournier will provide visionary academic leadership to Capital’s complex portfolio of undergraduate and graduate programs, and embolden Capital’s student-centered culture across all aspects of student learning. This includes programs in student and academic affairs, information technology, diversity and inclusion, international education, athletics and the library.

      He will be an advocate for holistic learning, raise the frequency of high-impact educational experiences such as internships, independent research, community-engaged learning, international experiences and other immersive experiences proven to enhance learning outcomes. With the opening of Capital’s new Convergent Media Center, a high-tech engine of ideas, active learning, creativity and production in the digital arts, electronic media, film, music technology, science, marketing and more, Fournier will be instrumental in developing Capital as a model for convergent teaching and learning.

      As a partner to a newly arranged faculty governance structure, Fournier also will manage and empower a staff composed of assistant provosts, deans and directors. With diversity and inclusiveness among Capital’s core values, Fournier will champion President Paul’s effort to make Capital a model inclusive community, while supporting strategic planning and enhancing the quality of the student experience.

      A resident of Bexley, Fournier earned a bachelor’s in psychology, a master’s in child development, and a doctorate in developmental psychology, all from The Ohio State University. He received a Franklin County Children’s Services Community Leadership Award for his work in community engagement with Central Ohio’s community settlement houses. And he was honored with the Ohio Psychological Association’s Small College Roundtable Award for Curricular Innovation for his work in teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS prevention.

      His scholarship has been published in multiple academic journals, and he has presented at academic, leadership, retention and professional organizations nationwide.
