Capital University Celebrates the Class of 2014 During 164th Commencement May 3

Capital University will graduate nearly 630 purposeful leaders who compose the Class of 2014 during its 164th Commencement Ceremony at 2 pm Saturday, May 3, in The Capital Center Field House, located on Capital's Bexley campus. The University will welcome E.J. Thomas, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity-MidOhio and Capital University trustee, as keynote speaker and honorary degree recipient.

The ceremony is expected to run for approximately two and a half hours. Tickets are required for admission. Doors open at 12:30 pm. Families and guests are encouraged to arrive early as there is no reserved seating. Please enter the Capital Center through the Pleasant Ridge Avenue (west) doors that are closest to Main Street.

Here are the highlights of what you need to know from now through graduation day.

Friday, May 2

Graduating seniors should attend Commencement Rehearsal at 2 pm in The Capital Center Performance Arena. You'll get important instructions about lineup and other logistics, including the traditional procession of graduates and the faculty our of Memorial Gateway.

Please note
: There is a chance of rain Saturday, so encourage your family members to bring umbrellas. The Memorial Gateway ceremony is an important Capital tradition, and it will go on unless there is extremely heavy rain, thunder or lightening.

At 3 pm, after rehearsal, seniors are invited to attend the President’s Barbecue in the Capital Court. The barbecue was moved indoors due to the threat of rain. At the same time, faculty, staff and students who have volunteered to help during the Commencement Ceremony should meet Era McMahon, director of Conference Services, in The Capital Center lobby for a 30-minute instruction and information session. The session will start promptly at 3 pm.

At 4:30 pm, graduates of the nursing program should join their families and friends at the Department of Nursing Pinning Ceremony in Mees Hall.

Saturday, May 3

Join us at 10 am for the 2014 Baccalaureate Service, which will take place in Mees Hall. All students and their families and guests are invited to attend this ecumenical service. Eric Anderson, director of Career Development, will speak.

At 10:30, those who have registered for the Family and Graduate Brunch should head over to the Capital Court. Advance ticket orders are requires. For more information, please contact Conference Services at or 614-236-6200.

At 11 am, the ROTC Commissioning Ceremony will take place in Huntington Recital Hall, located in the Conservatory of Music.

At 1:15 pm, graduates Graduate Lineup graduates should begin to line up in The Capital Center Performance Arena for the processional.

Other important information:

Capital Center Entry and Security

Graduates should enter The Capital Center through the Pleasant Ridge doors closest to Mound Street. Once lined up properly, graduates will be given specific instructions regarding the processional and recessional, receiving their diploma, etc. The Mound Street exit will be closed.

Families and friends must enter through the Pleasant Ridge doors closest to Main Street since the Mound Street entrance will be closed to anyone other than staff and volunteers.

Volunteers and staff who arrive early to work during Commencement should enter The Capital Center through the Mound Street doors. Make sure to wear your name tag.

Avoid bringing large bags. For security reasons, large bags will be subject to search, and unattended packages and bags will be searched and removed from the area by officers from Capital's Department of Public Safety. Contact Public Safety at 614-236-6666 for more information.


Parking Lot and Road Closures:

The small parking lot on the north side of The Capital Center is closed through Saturday. After 5 pm today, Friday, May 2, no parking will be permitted on Pleasant Ridge Avenue through Saturday. Beginning at noon Saturday, Pleasant Ridge Avenue will be open to southbound traffic only.


Lost and Found:

Items left in The Capital Center after the Commencement Ceremony will be taken to the building's front desk. Call 614-236-6209 to make arrangements to pick them up. To retrieve items confiscated or removed from the building by Public Safety, call 614-236-6666.
