News-Commencement-2012-288x216Capital University held its 162nd Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 5, 2012, conferring degrees on more than 640 graduates, at The Capital Center Field House, located at 1 College and Main in Bexley.

Capital President Denvy A. Bowman, Ph.D., presided over the ceremony, and Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman delivered the keynote address to a crowd of more than 5,000, including over 530 graduates who participated.

“Today, graduates, we celebrate with you and we celebrate because of you. For this marks the cultivation of 642 thoughtful, capable and ethical leaders whose values compel them to serve and improve their communities,” Bowman said.

“You are all to be commended,” Coleman said. Listing several accolades Columbus has earned for its economy, job creation and its ability to attract college gradates, Coleman added, “If you’re wondering where to move for a good job, I have some good news for you. You don’t have to move at all. Stay right here.

“At Capital, they ask you to ask, they ask you to think, and they ask you to lead. It is your obligation to change that world, and you only need two things to do that — inspiration and perspiration. You need to be focused, you must sweat for success. As you are conferred this degree from one of the finest universities in the country — Capital University — and as you go forward to change the world, do it with inspiration and perspiration.”

The festivities concluded with graduates completing the traditional procession through Memorial Gateway, the official entrance to campus. The tradition of the ceremonial passage through the gateway begins in the fall when entering students process in through the gate as a symbolic entrance into the academic community. The passage is repeated in reverse order each year at the end of Commencement, with all graduates exiting the gates, symbolically marking the completion of this part of their educational journey.
