Top Five Resources for Your Safety, Health and Success

The new academic year is well under way and alive with an endless supply of opportunities that promise to make your Capital University experience everything you imagined it would be. 

 

Settling into new routines, meeting new people and acclimating to unfamiliar living and learning environments are all part of what makes college life one of the most exciting times of your life. Exciting and a little overwhelming. So, it’s important to remember that Capital has many resources in place to help you keep yourself safe, healthy and successful. Here are our top five.

1. Personal Safety — Tips from Capital’s Public Safety Department

September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month. Capital places a high priority on keeping the campus safe. We have a fully commissioned police force whose officers bring many years of experience and uncompromising commitment to keeping the campus community safe and secure. Still, even in the safest communities, crime sometimes happens.

A comprehensive set of guidelines for keeping yourself safe is available on Capital’s campus safety web page (www.capital.edu/campus-safety). We thought these tips were especially relevant:  

  • Sign up for emergency text messages through CapAlert and subscribe to Safety Bulletin news alerts. You were automatically enrolled to receive emergency notifications through @capital.edu email. But you must update your profile and list your cell phone number to receive text messages.  
  • If you're traveling at night, use the buddy system. If that’s not an option, a free safety escort is available. On the Bexley campus, call Public Safety at 614-236-6666. On the Law School campus call security at 614-236-6161. Later this semester, we’ll roll out Rave Guardian and Eye Witness, new safety tools that can turn your phone into a mobile safety device.   
  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Pay attention to what’s going on around you. 
  • Walk with confidence and assurance.  
  • If you own a bike, lock it, check on it occasionally, and register it with Capital's Public Safety Department. If your bike is lost or stolen, your bike registration will help police identify it as yours if it’s recovered.   
  • Lock your doors and don’t keep valuable items in your vehicle.  
  • Don’t fumble for your keys — have them ready and out so you can enter quickly. 
  • Report suspicious people and activity to Public Safety as soon as possible; include as much information about the person, location, and/or type of car involved. 
  • If someone demands your property, give it to them and immediately contact the police. 
  • Don’t give personal information to someone you don’t know. 
  • If you need help at night, use the multiple emergency phones — red phones, blue lights and emergency call boxes — located throughout campus.   

 

2. Social Savvy — Alcohol Awareness Tips

At some point during your college career, you’ll end up at a party where there is alcohol. If you’re 21 and you choose to drink alcohol, there are some basic, but very important steps you should follow to drink responsibly and keep yourself healthy, safe and in good standing: 
  • Remember Capital is part of the Bexley community, and our neighbors — many of whom have small children — would appreciate it if you respect their property, use good manners and limit after-hours noise. Most of them know what it’s like to be a college student, and everyone wants you to have fun. But please try to be a good neighbor to those who live near campus. 
  • Set a “Party Safe” limit for how many drinks you’re going to have. Tell a friend the limit, count your drinks and don’t go over your limit.  
  • Remember the acronym HALT. Don't drink if you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. HALT drinking if any of those apply.  
  • Before you celebrate, designate — a driver. Take turns with friends so everyone gets to be it.  
  • Stick together. If someone in your group has had too much to drink, be a good friend and see that they get home safely. Try not to let them leave with someone you don't know.
  • Think before you drink. Alcohol may not always affect you in the same way. If you are upset, stressed out, tired or angry, alcohol may have a stronger impact than it might normally have. 
  • Remember, you are responsible for your decisions about when and how much to drink. You are equally responsible for consequences if you make bad decisions under the influence. 
  • To avoid ingesting drugs such as Rohypnol, Ketamine and GHB, which increase the risk of sexual assault if slipped into a drink, only drink from containers you open or drinks you’ve seen poured. Never leave your drink unattended. Avoid group drinks like punch bowls.  
  • Remember, hosting a party where people under 21 possess or consume alcohol is a violation of Ohio law.

3. Connectivity — Safety Communication Tools

CapAlert: Capital has multiple communication tools to inform the campus community about potential safety threats. One of our most powerful tools is CapAlert — our emergency notification system. CapAlert will notify you of an emergency on campus by sending an email message to your Capital email account. You can sign up to receive CapAlert messages by text to your Short Message Service device (Ex: cell phone, pager, Blackberry, etc.) and/or to an alternative email account. Add up to four additional email addresses or communication devices to be notified in case of an emergency — including a parent's or spouse's device. 

Safety Bulletin: Capital maintains a Campus Safety Bulletin at www.capital.edu/Safety-Bulletin. Anytime something happens on or near campus that we think is cause for concern, we'll post it there. We also post that information on our news and events page at www.capital.edu/news
 
News Alerts: You can sign up to receive web alerts, or receive email notifications, when new information is posted to the Safety Bulletin and Capital’s news page. After CapAlert messages, the web is the first place new information will be posted. Just log in at the top of www.capital.edu with your Capital University username and password. Select Edit My Profile, then select the Custom tab, and simply check the subscriptions you are interested in.

4. Center for Health and Wellness

Capital takes a holistic approach to safety, health and wellness. From the common cold to flu shots, depression screenings and counseling, our Center for Health and Wellness provides a comprehensive array of mental health, medical, and disability related services that will help assess, treat, and prevent medical or emotional barriers to healthy living and learning, and to promote health and wellness on campus.

5. Academic Success

No matter how talented you are, sooner or later you're going to have questions. Like how to solve a pesky equation, take notes or improve your focus in class. Academic Success helps all students make the most of their learning experiences at Capital University.

 

Through peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, online tutoring, peer academic advising, study strategies, review sessions, help for people with disabilities and other services, Academic Success has one goal: to help students succeed.
