    Unlocking the Secrets of Fractals

    Remember the title sequence of The Matrix Revolution, with its exploding rain of glowing green computer code? Remember the forests on the moons of Endor in Return of the Jedi? These stunning images would have been impossible to produce without computer-assisted fractal geometry.

    Fractal images are powerful and extremely computer-intensive visualizations of geometrically complex objects. And they’re not just tools for moviemakers. Scientists use fractals to visually represent objects in astronomy, meteorology and ecology with a high degree of realism. And artists use them to create works of amazing beauty.

    In a course called "Parallel Computing," you will learn how to produce stunning fractal images, including images of the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. You will first develop a mathematical model, then implement the model, and finally create a computer model using multiple parallel supercomputers to speed up the process.

    This is only one example of how computational science can be used to enrich the study of computer science.
