What is Early Music?

Early Music in Columbus is a concert series dedicated to the music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Since 1980, Early Music in Columbus has each year presented a series of concerts featuring some of the finest national and international artists who specialize in the music of these periods. This enormous period of time spans the Middle Ages (from around 1100 A.D.) through the mid-1750s.

What Will You Hear at an Early Music Concert?

There is something for everyone at an early music concert. You might hear:

  • Gregorian chant
  • Madrigals
  • Bawdy ballads
  • Love songs
  • Motets
  • Dances
  • Fantasies

Here are just a few of the instruments and music you might hear at an early music concert:

  • Guitar, lute and theorbo
  • Medieval and Renaissance harps
  • Recorders as small as five inches and some as tall as a person
  • Harpsichords
  • Viols, violins, vielles and rebecs
  • The hurdy-gurdy
  • Crumhorns that might make you laugh the first time you hear one!
