Conservatory of Music
Ryan Shaw, Ph.D., is currently assistant professor of music education at Capital University, where he teaches introduction and methods courses and coordinates all aspects of the undergraduate music education, along with the summer master's in music education programs. He also the advisor for Capital’s OCMEA chapter. Before coming to Capital in the fall of 2015, he was a Ph.D. student in music education at Michigan State University. As a graduate assistant, Dr. Shaw has taught and assisted with numerous undergraduate music education courses, guest lectured for graduate classes, and served as the advisor for MSU’s Collegiate NAfME Chapter. He has also worked with the bands at MSU. Duties have included arranging music for the Spartan Marching Band, and for three semesters, co-conducting the MSU Campus Band. Finally, Dr. Shaw has taught as an adjunct instructor. In the fall of 2013, he taught a course on arts integration as an adjunct lecturer at Olivet College. Dr. Shaw's scholarly interests include arts education policy, music teacher stress and work-life balance, and teacher’s planning and instructional practices. In the policy arena, he has presented research on music teacher evaluation at the AERA Annual Meeting and the Society for Music Teacher Education Symposium. He has also been published in Arts Education Policy Review and serves as the policy/advocacy editor for the Michigan Music Educator. His research on the work-life balance of competitive marching band teachers was recently published in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, was presented at the 2014 NAfME Music Research and Teacher Education Conference, and was featured at the 2014 Midwest Clinic. Finally, Dr. Shaw has presented research on the lesson-planning practices of band teachers and also had an article on critical thinking and critical pedagogy published in Music Educators Journal.
