Primary duties include checking out materials and receiving returned materials. Other duties may include providing basic information services, such as directional assistance to patrons, catalog searching, new materials preparation, filing, and moving materials. May include evening and weekend hours.


•Competent in using Microsoft Word, Google Apps, and the internet. •Basic familiarity with the library’s catalog, an ability to file alphabetically and/or by Library of Congress Classification system. •Strong customer service skills, such as answering the phone, fielding common questions based on library policy, and referring more complicated questions to the appropriate staff person(s). •Certain students will assist staff and be trained in the use of interlibrary loan services, acquisitions processing, technical processing, and periodicals maintenance. •Attention to detail is essential. Responsible and professional behavior is expected. •Must be able to lift 25-pound boxes above one’s head and to sit, bend, and reach. •Familiarity with photocopiers, scanning, and faxing is a plus. •Some staff will be required to use Microsoft Excel.


Scheduling is regular, but is arranged with the supervisor and the other library work-study students. Available hours are shared as equitably as possible, with the knowledge that compromise is often necessary. Students are expected to arrange for a substitute work study student if they cannot fulfill their shift and inform supervisors of the change.
