University Programming's Iron Chef Competition

Written by Lacy Mitchell '08

Have you ever watched the Food Network's "Iron Chef" and thought, "I could do that"?

 Prizes for winners and losesrs.

 The winners got the big baskets and the others got popcorn.

That's exactly what University Programming (or U.P., as Cap students know it) wanted to find out when they hosted an Iron Chef Competition at last week's Wicked Wednesday. Four teams of two were selected from the crowd. Each team was given 30 minutes to make any dish they wanted to serve the judges.

Sounds easy enough, doesn't it? The only catch was the teams had to use the secret ingredient: Easy Mac!

While the teams were preparing their dishes, the audience got to enjoy ice cream and participate in several food challenges, including:

  • Funny Bunny – contestants had to pack marshmallows in their mouths and say "funny bunny";
  • Mellow Run – contestants took a Red Vine licorice and placed a marshmallow at the end, then had to eat it without using their hands; and,
  • Taste the Rainbow – contestants blindly picked a Skittle candy from a brown bag and had to guess the flavor..
 Dan and Katie are winners with their mushroom ala pasta dish.

At the end of the 30 minutes, only one team's cuisine would reign supreme! Would it be Laura and Anne's Pepper Poppa Pasta? John and Ryan's Macaroni Salad? Dan and Katie's Mushroom a la Pasta? Or Chuck and Clinton's Easy Mac Stoup? After all dishes were judged, it was Dan and Katie's Mushroom a la Pasta that wowed the judges, making them U.P.'s Iron Chefs. Bobby Flay watch out!

The Iron Chef competition is just one of many events U.P. plans for fellow students. U.P. consists of a board of students who plan social activities for the entire campus, including Homecoming, the annual block parties and SpringFest. The signature event of U.P. is Wicked Wednesday. Every Wednesday there is some type of event for students to attend – ranging from comediennes and hypnotists to movie night and, of course, the Iron Chef competition.

So, any Wednesday that you're looking for something to do, just call 236-7123 for a good time!
