Every January, the Capital University community celebrates the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Learning. This year marks the 21st year of our commitment. Although the events are coordinated by the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the event belongs to the entire campus. Students, staff and faculty are instrumental to the success of the day’s events. On this day, we open our campus to the wider community of Central Ohio . Citizens of Central Ohio delight in an opportunity to be challenged by the keynote speaker, engage in meaningful dialogue with students, staff and faculty during the workshops, and enjoy the hospitality of our campus.

On Monday, January 16, 2012 we will commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. King through service and learning. Our theme, Serving the Beloved Community captures our commitment to act, serve and engage to build Dr. King’s commitment to the Beloved Community.
The day will commence at 8 am with a Community Gathering in Harry C. Moores, Campus Center; and, the Day of Learning convocation program will follow in Mees Hall. Dr. David Emmanuel Goatley, Executive Director of the Lott-Carey Institute for Global Missions has been selected to give the Gay S. Steele Keynote Address.

Following convocation all are welcome to participate in a series of workshops to discuss a wide range of workshops that speak to the relevance of Dr. King’s work in the 21st century.

10:30 am - noon	Campus-Wide Workshops Restrictions on Voting Laws; African American Male Retention in Higher Education; The DREAM Act; Homelessness; Children's Workshop: Free to Learn; Community Organizing & Service; Civil Rights and Human Rights in the 21st Century; Islam 101 and more.
11 am - 1 pm	The Hank Marr Jazz Luncheon Featuring Bobby Floyd, Gene Walker, Rob Parton, and Reggie Jackson Cost: $12.25/adults; $8.00 children 10 and under
11 am - 5 pm	Ongoing Events Kids Korner • Works from the Schumacher Gallery
1:30 pm	Special Afternoon Events Campus Wide Service Project: Canned Food Collection and Health and Wellness/Disaster Relief Fair • RAISE Mass choir Conducted by Dr. Raymond Wise

All events are open to the public, and participants are asked to bring at least one canned food item to be donated to area food banks. All events, with the exception of the Hank Marr Jazz Luncheon, are free of charge. Tickets for the luncheon may be purchased one hour prior to and immediately following the Convocation.
