Schumacher Gallery
Permanent Collection
The Schumacher Gallery's Permanent Collections offer a wonderfully diverse selection of more than 2500 works for study and enjoyment. These collections encompass 2000 years of cultural history. Since the Gallery's inception in 1964, hundreds of donors have provided objects of art, funds, and services to create this important cultural legacy.

Shutter and Sound: The Jazz Photography of Bob Willoughby
September 8 - December 5, 2026
The gallery is closed October 15-18 for midterm break and November 25-29 for Thanksgiving.
Bob Willoughby (19272009) is perhaps best known for his candid photographs of famous Hollywood actors, but before taking photos on film sets, he captured many images of jazz musicians. Working in difficult lighting and crowded conditions, the images in “Shutter and Sound: The Jazz Photography of Bob Willoughby” are jazz improvisation made manifest: they give the viewer a sense of vibrant intimacy as he captured wistful singers, jamming musicians, and enthusiastic audiences.

Selections from The Schumacher Gallery’s Newest Acquisitions (Showcase Gallery)
This exhibition highlights recent donations of photographs, paintings, and sculptures to The Schumacher Gallery. These works will add to the continued rich diversity of the museum’s permanent collections.
Martin Luther King: Selma
January 18 - March 24, 2027
The gallery is closed February 27-March 8 for midterm break
This exhibition features 67 original vintage news photographs memorializing the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March, a pivotal event of the Civil Rights movement that led directly to the Voting Rights Act later that year. With voting rights once again under attack, this moving and memorable exhibition is as timely as ever. These are the very press prints, culled from newspaper archives, that appeared on front pages and did so much to move the needle of public opinion.

Under and Over; Over and Over (Showcase Gallery)
The Cultural Arts Weaving Studio is celebrating its first Gallery Showcase! The showcase will demonstrate the “Joy of Handweaving” in all shapes and sizes. The woven works range from large floor looms to portable tapestry looms and everything in between. Items are woven by students and faculty, past and present. A fiber show celebrating the fiber arts.

The Schumacher Gallery app is available as a free download from the iTunes App Store and the Google Play App Store.
This mobile docent app will enhance your overall experience of the gallery and provide an insider’s look of the artwork. Within each of the galleries, this app will highlight multiple pieces providing audio tours, detailed images, artist biographies, and behind-the-scene info. Plus, you can save your favorite artwork in your own collection for quick reference.

Hours
The Schumacher Gallery will be open Monday - Friday, 12 - 4 pm and Saturday, 1 - 4:30 pm during the academic year. We are closed during the summer and on university holidays.
Directions and parking
The Gallery is located on the fourth floor of The Blackmore Library at Capital University.

Parking is available on the Main Street Plaza parking at Pleasant Ridge and Mound Street - one block south of Main - and on Main St. until 4 pm, or on any of the surrounding side streets.
