Navigating College as a Woman in STEM

Navigating college as a woman in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) can be both rewarding and challenging. While women have made significant strides in STEM fields in recent years, there are still gender disparities and unique obstacles to overcome. Leigh Johnson, Ph.D., M.A.S., associate professor of Mathematics at Capital University, discusses her experience of navigating higher education as a woman in STEM.

  • Find a Supportive Community: Seek out clubs, organizations, or affinity groups on campus that focus on women in STEM. These communities can provide mentorship, networking opportunities, and emotional support.

  • Build a Strong Support System: Connect with professors, advisors, and peers who can offer guidance and support throughout your academic journey.

  • Participate in Research: Seek out research opportunities, whether through professors, research programs, or internships. This hands-on experience can be invaluable and help you build a strong resume.

  • Mentorship Matters: Find a mentor, ideally a woman in your field, who can offer guidance, advice, and support as you navigate your STEM career.

  • Balance Your Life: Maintain a healthy work-life balance. College can be stressful but taking care of your physical and mental health is essential for long-term success.

You are not alone in your journey as a woman in STEM. Many organizations and individuals are dedicated to supporting women in these fields. Keep pushing forward, and your contributions to STEM can make a significant impact.
