Biography

Brooke Burns-Jackson joined the faculty of Capital University Law School as an adjunct in the 2013-2014 school year. Since 2006, Brooke has worked as an Assistant State Public Defender for the Office of the Ohio Public Defender, where she represents children in post-dispositional actions, primarily in courts of appeals throughout Ohio. A significant portion of her work focuses on representing youth who are charged with sexually oriented offenses and challenging the application of Ohio’s Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (“SORNA”) to juvenile offenders; and, she has litigated several challenges to SORNA in the Supreme Court of Ohio. In addition to training juvenile defenders, court personnel, and treatment providers on the applicability of SORNA to children, Brooke is also a member of a national SORNA working group comprised of litigants, research professionals, treatment providers, and policy stakeholders who are working together to advocate for evidence-based reform in the area of juvenile sex offender registration.Brooke lives in near-east Columbus with her husband and their two boys where she serves as Chair to a local nonprofit organization. She spends her free time reading and baking cupcakes.
