Biography

For almost 30 years, Neal has played many roles in the music scene of Columbus, Ohio; educator, studio owner, live sound engineer, touring performer, and record producer.

Within the Conservatory of Music at Capital University, Neal is the head of the Music Technology program. Using the programs many recording studios, mixing spaces and technology areas, Neal teaches classes in studio production, web development, music technology, entrepreneurship. He is also head of the Music Technology Internship program, sending students all over Ohio and the US. With an emphasis on critical thinking and a hands-on approach to learning, the program also encourages participation in immersive educational experiences such as international study away experiences to Belfast Northern Ireland, Berlin Germany, and Copenhagen, Denmark. Every October, the department also plans a domestic trips to cities such as Nashville, New York, and Chicago. Neal believes in equipping his students with the correct and most effective tools, encouraging students to swing for the fences, and using the successes and failures as cherished teaching moments.

Before teaching, Neal and his business partner opened Workbook Studio, a 3,200 sq. ft New York style loft recording and performance space hosting the region's best and talent and was featured in EQ, TapeOp, and Mix magazines. In this space, working on hundreds of songs, Neal also embraced his marketing side by hosting benefit concerts, CD releases shows, art openings and shooting two pilot episodes of a live music program. Neal previously served as the Coordinating Instructor of the Hocking College Music Production and Business Program.
