Spring 2025 at TLS

“Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." (Phillipians 4:8)

By the time you read this, it will be April. How quickly the time goes by!

There’s lots of activity on campus this spring. First, we’re so excited – as always – about the Nelson W. Trout Lectures, which will take place this week, April 3-4. The keynote speaker and preacher is the Rev. Dr. Teresa Smallwood, who is a public theologian and dean of our partner school United Lutheran Seminary in Pennsylvania. We’re also excited to welcome the Rev. Dr. James Thomas, author of the recently published A Rumor of Black Lutherans: The Formation of Black Leadership in Early American Lutheranism, which includes a chapter on Dr. Trout

Dean Kit Kleinhans and the Rev. Dr. Joy Schroeder are both retiring at the end of June, as is the Rev. Dr. Wray Bryant, who has taught Greek at Trinity for decades. All three will be recognized as emeriti faculty by Capital University at a Celebration of Excellence on April 8.

Trinity will honor these faculty with a “Last Lectures” event on Tuesday, May 6, beginning at 1:00 in Gloria Dei. Dean Kleinhans, Dr. Bryant, and Dr. Schroeder will each give a 30-minute talk as the culmination of their decades of teaching. The last lectures will be followed by a reception in the LeSage Room at 3:30. Please do plan to join us to celebrate the vocation of these faithful educators!

Meanwhile, Trinity faculty have finalized the list of recipients of student academic and leadership awards. This year for the first time, Trinity award recipients will be included in the Capital University Honors Convocation, to be held on April 16.

Finally, the class of 2025 will graduate on Saturday, May 24. The commencement eucharist is at 10:30, and the commencement ceremony itself is at 1:30, both in Gloria Dei.

We have a lot to celebrate. Thanks be to God!
