Technical Ecstasy Explores the Tension Between Humanity and Technology
Technical Ecstasy, currently on view in the Schumacher Gallery at Capital University, showcases the work of Capital artist and employee Charles Crabtree, whose practice explores the evolving relationship between humanity and technology.
A Columbus native and self-taught artist, Crabtree draws inspiration from mythology, world history, and science fiction, weaving these influences into visually striking works that merge mechanical elements with organic forms. His art reflects both fascination and discomfort, inviting reflection on the ways machines shape human identity, power, and possibility.
Working primarily with airbrush, Crabtree achieves a high level of technical precision while maintaining an ethereal, almost otherworldly quality. Throughout the exhibition, he poses a central question: Will biomechanics create gods—or monsters? The question lingers as viewers move through the gallery, encouraging contemplation of innovation, ethics, and the future of human-machine connection.
Technical Ecstasy offers a compelling exploration of contemporary anxieties and imagination, underscoring Capital University’s commitment to supporting creative inquiry that crosses disciplines and challenges perspective.
