Fostering Global Experiences Through Music Technology and Music Industry

Capital University’s Music Technology and Music Industry programs are committed to getting students out of the traditional classroom and diving into the music industry first-hand with experiential learning opportunities.

Students take a unique journey into the dynamic world of music production, technology, and industry immersion. From regional weekend road trips and international escapades to internships at renowned companies and captivating workshops, Capital’s Music Technology and Industry programs truly offer a real-world education.

One hallmark of these programs is their array of regional and international trips, which are gateways to important career insights and diversity in musical cultures. Picture this: students exploring the hottest Nashville studios, networking at a New York City trade show, and experiencing the diversity of music genres in Chicago. These trips aren’t just sightseeing excursions, they’re opportunities for students to absorb the essence of each musical hub, interact with industry professionals, and gain invaluable insights into the nuances of music production, technology, and business.

But the journey doesn’t stop there.

Capital’s Music Technology and Industry programs extend their reach across borders, allowing students to embark on international voyages to places like Germany, Northern Ireland, and Denmark. These global adventures not only broaden students’ cultural horizons but also reveal the differences in music scenes, techniques, and technologies, fostering a truly global perspective in their craft. A common theme in these trips includes meeting and interacting with students at overseas universities. These interactions create inspiring opportunities for peer-to-peer networking, sharing, and lots of laughter!

Internships are another cornerstone of the program, providing students with real-world experiences at well-known organizations like Nickelodeon, Sony Pictures, and BET Television. The most important takeaway from these internships is understanding what working in the music industry is like. Students can critically consider how their education on Capital’s campus translates to actual careers they want to pursue. This motivation to career readiness through experiential learning is what sets these programs apart.

At the heart of Capital’s Music Technology program lies the Creative Arts Workshop, an annual event where local industry professionals converge on Capital’s campus to share their expertise. From producers to sound engineers, each year brings a diverse lineup of speakers who offer invaluable insights and advice to aspiring music enthusiasts. Moreover, a nationally renowned keynote presenter adds an extra layer of inspiration, leaving students motivated and eager to pursue their passions.

For seniors in the program, the journey culminates in the Senior Project class, a deep dive into a topic of their choice within the music industry. Here, research and exploration take center stage as students delve into areas such as audio engineering, music production, sound design, and other innovative research, applying their knowledge in advanced and practical ways.

And what better way to cap off their journey than with a trip to the NAMM Show? Every year, senior Music Technology students descend upon this premier industry event in Anaheim, Calif., rubbing shoulders with more than 60,000 attendees and exploring five convention-size halls filled with the latest instruments, technologies, and innovations. It’s an exhilarating finale to their academic journey, providing a glimpse into the cutting edge of the music industry and leaving them inspired for what lies ahead.

Capital University’s Music Technology and Music Industry programs aren’t just about textbooks and lectures. They’re about immersive experiences that shape the music business and technologists of tomorrow. The classes are taken out of the classroom so that students see and know what these exciting careers offer and how they can be part of them.
