February 2026: Scholarly and Professional Achievements of Capital University Faculty, Staff, and Students

Each month, Capital University takes immense pride in showcasing the remarkable accomplishments of our faculty, staff, and students. These achievements, ranging from groundbreaking research and innovative projects to significant contributions in various fields, reflect the vibrant intellectual community and commitment to excellence that define our institution. Join us in applauding these milestones and the individuals who are not only advancing their respective disciplines but also shaping the future of our university and community.

Congratulations to Annie Witzky (biology), Christine Anderson (biology), and students Kristell Valdivia, Jared Osorio Ayala, and Maddie Murphy who presented their work at the Ohio Wildlife Management Conference. Valdiva, Osorio Ayala and their mentor Witzky presented Extraction of eDNA from Owl Pellets for Species Identification. Murphy and her mentor Anderson presented Detecting Ranavirus using TaqMan Quantitative PCR in Aquatic Turtles from Central and Southeastern Ohio. According to Witzky, “These student projects focused on using molecular biology techniques to better understand wildlife species in Ohio. This work is highly valuable for conservation and wildlife management.”

Kudos to Tracy Hoag (nursing) who received the Inclusive Excellence Leadership Award at Capital University’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Learning. Hoag’s dean Haether Janiszewski Goodin remarked: “Dr. Hoag was very deserving of this award for all the hard work she has been involved leading the first-year nursing student experience and her work within the Capital community and beyond!”

Congratulations to Rachel Nelms (art and art therapy) for publishing the chapter Grief and Aggression in Art Therapy: The Intersection of Violence and Grief in The Wiley Handbook of Art Therapy, 2nd Ed. In the newly revised second edition of the Wiley Handbook of Art Therapy, a team of distinguished art therapists delivers a compilation of unprecedented depth and breadth about art therapy. Nelms describes the work as “A contemporary and holistic picture of a profession that has undergone profound transformation since the publication of the first edition of this book.”

On February 26, Capital University’s Board of Trustees voted in favor of tenure and promotion for the following colleagues. A warm round of applause for each of them.
