The first weeks of the academic year always carry a special kind of energy – the sound of doors opening, whistles blowing in Bernlohr Stadium, friendships forming, and ideas taking flight. The start of the academic year also brings a sense of renewal, as we welcomed over 850 new students to the University – the most since 2020 – across the undergraduate, graduate, Law School, and Seminary programs. As I reflect on move-in weekend and our first days together this fall, it’s hard to believe how quickly we’ve transitioned from the excitement of arrival to the intensity of midterms and now, the welcome pause of Fall Break.
In just a few short weeks, I’ve witnessed what makes Capital such a remarkable community. From lunchtime walks across our Bexley campus to evenings spent at events, concerts, performances, and athletic competitions, there’s been a shared sense of pride and purpose that’s unmistakable.
Our faculty ensembles have filled Huntington Recital Hall with extraordinary music, performances that reminded us how creativity and discipline intertwine to form artistry. On the courts and fields, our soccer, volleyball, cross-country, and football teams have played with heart, resilience, and true CapFam spirit. The first fall theatre production and choral concert opened to an enthusiastic audience, offering both reflection and poignancy. And our students, whether leading Student Government discussions, studying late in Blackmore Library, or volunteering in the community, continue to show us what it means to live out Capital’s mission to transform lives through empowering experiences.
This fall has also been marked by meaningful engagement across the entirety of Capital. At Trinity Lutheran Seminary, I’ve joined conversations about faith and formation that continue to shape leaders grounded in service. Downtown, at our Law School, I’ve seen students preparing to uphold justice and fairness in a world that deeply needs both. Our graduate programs, in counseling, business, education, social work, and beyond, are thriving with purpose-driven professionals who embody lifelong learning in action. And in Bexley with our undergraduate programs, I’ve witnessed the extraordinary work of our faculty, staff, and coaches who bring Capital’s mission to life each day. Their collective impact is felt in every corner of campus – in classrooms alive with discussion, residence halls that foster belonging, studios that spark creativity, and fields and courts where teamwork builds confidence. Together, they create the environment where students are known, challenged, and supported to thrive. Each of these communities contributes uniquely to the fabric of Capital University, and together they tell a story of strength, compassion, and commitment.
These weeks have also been filled with renewed connections – with alumni whose stories stretch back decades, donors who believe passionately in our future, and community leaders eager to partner with Capital in meaningful ways. Each conversation has strengthened my conviction that this University is not only an academic home, but also a force for good in Bexley, Columbus, and beyond.
That shared future is what inspires me most. Across the University, we are deepening our commitment to student success and educational excellence, which are integral to our mission, vision, and values. We are building new partnerships in Bexley and Columbus, expanding opportunities for our students to learn by doing, and ensuring that our resources align with our purpose. Every step we take is grounded in the belief that Capital graduates change the world not by accident, but by design – through preparation, compassion, and integrity.
To our students: thank you for your enthusiasm and trust. You remind us daily why this work matters.
To our faculty and staff: thank you for the care, creativity, and commitment you bring to your calling.
To our alumni and friends: thank you for continuing to lift this University through your generosity, mentorship, and pride.
As the leaves begin to turn on Main Street, I hope we all take a moment to notice what is taking root – new ideas, new relationships, and renewed purpose.
The start of an academic year is more than a beginning. It’s a reminder that at Capital, every season is one of possibility.
