Biography

A faculty member at Capital University since 1986, Dr. Ashbrook, a professor of psychology, previously served as department chair, acting dean of Adult Learning and Assessment, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, dean of the Unified College, and as provost and vice president for Academic and Student Affairs (2010-2016).

He earned his B.S. in psychology from the University of Maryland, and his M.A. and Ph.D. (clinical psychology), and M.F.A. (creative writing) from The Ohio State University. He completed his internship at the University of Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital, and received post-doctoral training in pediatric and health psychology.

Dr. Ashbrook, a licensed clinical psychologist in Ohio and North Carolina, has led a medical and behavioral health consulting practice that specializes in publicly funded demonstration grants, outsourced services for public, governmental, and nonprofit agencies, and contract forensic, diagnostic, correctional and disability services.

Dr. Ashbrook, a longtime member and past chair of the Ohio Psychological Association Ethics Committee, regularly consults on matters of professional conduct. Currently, Dr. Ashbrook’s research and clinical interests focus on the American with Disabilities Act, and he serves as a national consultant on matters of nonstandard testing accommodations to a variety of professional licensing and testing agencies. Dr. Ashbrook also is interested in social justice as related to mass incarceration. He provides mental health and consultative services to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction and regularly works in one of Ohio’s prisons.
