Biography

Karla Cherwinski began her teaching career in 1993 in the Lancaster City Schools and she currently teaches 1st and 2nd grade general music at Indian Trail Elementary in Canal Winchester, Ohio.

An in demand clinician, Karla has presented sessions on a variety of topics around North American including the 2017 International Kodály Symposium in Alberta, Canada, multiple Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE) National Conferences, New Jersey Music Educators Conference (NJMEA), New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) as the winter conference Elementary General Music Headliner and the 2019 summer conference Elementary General Music Headliner, Kodály Chapter of Minnesota (KCM), Michigan Kodály Educators (MIKE), Capital Collegiate Kodály Educators (CCKE), Kentucky Association of Kodály Educators (KAKE), Tri-City Kodály Educators (TRIKE), the Ohio Music Educators Conference (OMEA) and the MidWest Kodály Music Educator’s (MKMEA) Conferences. Karla has also served in various positions on local, regional and national boards through MKMEA and OAKE, most recently as the program co-chair for the 2019 OAKE National Conference that was held in Columbus, Ohio in March 2019. Karla was also named the 2019 Columbus Symphony Orchestra Elementary Educator of the Year.

Mrs. Cherwinski served as the Children’s Choir director at Bexley United Methodist from 1993-2002. A classically trained pianist, Karla teaches private piano lessons, substitute directs and plays services at her church and accompanies high school students for solo and ensemble contest.

In addition to her musical endeavors, Karla enjoys branching out into other areas of education and has been very involved at building and district level in Canal Winchester as a Related Arts grade level representative, mentor to first year teachers, building technology assistant, yearbook coordinator, Master Teacher Designation co-chair, and Canal Winchester Education Association (union) Co-President. She recently renewed her Ohio Department of Education Master Teacher Designation, received Google Certified Educator Level I certification.
