Biography

James Dowdy holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Capital University Conservatory of Music and a Master’s degree from the Ohio State University. He is a retired music educator, having served the Canal Winchester Local and Worthington City schools districts a total of thirty years. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Capital University as a member of their music education faculty. Additional affiliations include ASBDA, Phi Beta Mu, Phi Mu Alpha and Phi Delta Kappa. He remains active as an OMEA adjudicator and conductor of the Junior Winds, an auditioned ensemble affiliated with Capital University for talented musicians grades 8-9.

He has been a clinician at Capital University’s “The Complete Band Director Workshop” and has served as a guest lecturer in graduate courses at The Ohio State University. He is a conductor with the Capital University Winds and Percussion Camp and has been a trombone instructor and conductor at the Wooster Music Camp. He has been elected to many district and state-level positions for the Ohio Music Education Association and currently serves as OMEA’s Advocacy Chair. He was recognized by OMEA as their Outstanding Music Educator in 1999 and received the Columbus Symphony Orchestra’s Secondary Schools Music Educator Award in 2001.
