Academic Technology

Classrooms

Capital University has more than 50 classrooms with presentation technology. Classrooms equipped with a computer and projector have the capability to play DVDs and can stream audio and video on computers.

Canvas

Capital University uses the Canvas learning management system. Every course approved by the registrar’s office receives a Canvas course shell and course enrollment is managed automatically from myCap.

Instructors can also use Canvas for academic advising functions, such as communicating with student advisees, providing documentation, and managing advisee progress. In addition, instructors may create blank course shells to be used as sandbox and development environments (for future course development or for testing functionality of the system).

CELT offers one-on-one assistance for course development, instructional design assistance, and training offerings for Canvas.

Echo360

Capital University employs a multi-faceted lecture recording system called Echo360. Instructors can use Echo360 to record classroom lectures (or any class session) via classroom computers and web cameras, and to create personal recordings (e.g., instructional videos, microlectures, etc.). All captured videos are stored in a cloud environment, and all course videos can be made available to students via Canvas. Videos have editable transcripts generated for accessibility, and student interactions allow for note-taking, Q&A, polling, and aid with confusing topics.

Analytics are also available when using Echo360 in conjunction with your Canvas courses.

Zoom

All faculty, staff, and students at Capital have a fully licensed Zoom account. Go to https://capital.zoom.us and click the “Sign In” button to log in with your Capital email address and password. Zoom can be used to facilitate remote class sessions, presentations, and interactive discussions with users wherever they are; no class seat time is needed. Zoom allows for the sharing of documents, multiple presenters, and webcam functionality to provide a synchronous experience for an online or hybrid class. Sessions can also be recorded for sharing.

Qualtrics

Capital has an installation of Qualtrics survey generation software, which can handle everything from simple questionnaires to detailed research projects. Design your survey with an intuitive drag-and-drop survey builder, powerful logic, 100+ question types, and pre-built survey templates.

If you have questions or would like to get started, contact qualtrics@capital.edu.

Plagiarism Checking

Within Canvas, any student writing submissions can be reviewed for originality. Instructors also can digitally mark up any student paper via Canvas.

Respondus Lockdown Browser/Monitor

Respondus Lockdown Browser is a special online testing tool used to minimize the ability to search the Internet for answers on a quiz or exam administered in Canvas. If an instructor requires Lockdown Browser for a test then that test cannot be taken with any other browser (i.e., Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.). The Lockdown Browser only allows access to the quiz in Canvas and will disable:

• the ability to open any other program on the computer,
• the ability to open a new window or tab in the browser,
• all screen captures, and
• all printing abilities (unless otherwise allowed by the instructor).

By implementing the Monitor add-on, students taking tests remotely will be asked to have their web camera and microphone turned on to allow you to review their exam session to ensure there are no issues with potential academic dishonesty.

Lockdown Browser also works with iPads and Chromebooks, but does not function outside of Canvas.
