GAR Professorship

The GAR Endowed Professorship in Philosophy

In 1989 the GAR Foundation established an endowed fund to provide partial salary support for a professor of philosophy.

Eligibility

The successful candidate for the GAR Endowed Professorship in Philosophy will be a full-time, tenure-track or tenured, current or newly appointed Capital University philosophy faculty member and will be recognized by the profession as a respected teacher and scholar. Endowment funds will be used to provide partial salary support. Based upon available proceeds of the endowment, the holder may be awarded a summer scholarship stipend and may propose an annual budget to foster the purposes of the endowed professorship. The appointee may hold the professorship for a six-year term, subject to annual review and reappointment, and may be eligible for subsequent reappointment. The holder will submit an annual report of related activity to the provost, the academic chair or dean, and the GAR committee. If endowed funds beyond salary support are requested, an annual budget request will also be submitted.

Selection Process

The GAR Endowed Professor in Philosophy will be appointed by the president and officially named by the Board of Trustees upon the recommendation of the appropriate faculty, chair of the religion and philosophy department, and provost. The GAR Committee, which will include all tenured faculty members in the department of religion and philosophy, a tenured faculty member from another humanities department, and a representative from the provost’s office, will review nominations for the professorship and recommend a candidate for appointment.

Ongoing Evaluation and Guidance

The GAR Committee, including the chair of the religion and philosophy department and assisted by a liaison from the advancement staff, will provide ongoing guidance to the professorship holder on matters related to the endowed professorship. The GAR Committee will also provide recommendations to the provost regarding review and reappointment as described above.
